A hauntingly, almost menacing opening leads the listener by the inner ear into ones imagined undefinable memories of what possibly was, is and could be.

“What you are about to hear is the prequel to the music I have made.”
If we got the chance to go back, to sit with a keyboard instead of picking up a guitar, to make
‘Bedroom Music' instead of standing onstage.
An inveterate live performer, her debut album, Dark Nights Make for Brighter Days, a dazzling balance of parallel live takes, her sophomore album, Waiting Rooms, field recorded live on location in train stations, ferry terminals and hospital waiting rooms.
That trademark audience intimacy muted by modern times, her distinctive voice feeling all but lost; the only course of action was DIY! Whates turned inward, teaching herself how to record and produce; amassing old keyboards and once cherished tape decks, scoring lo-fi home cooked animation for The Chill Out Tent and digging deeper into that feeling of hope that had once fuelled her songcraft.
By using the Casio & Fisher Price sounds of her early years and exploring the events of childhood, touchstones that form the adults we become. In her own words what she found in those hard memories and early traumas weren’t songs so much as emotional sections.
Beyond Balearic, past outsider art, when we’re left with ourselves and the memories of music we could have made, listening for echoes of past selves, unearthing potential futures in Early Works.

It’s great to hear how your musical ideas start out. The vocal lines together with the accompanying guitar and the poetry in your lyrics are wonderful. Thank you dean1066
