You know me as well as anybody does As well as I know myself I’m trying to know myself You love me as much as anybody has As much as i love myself I’m trying love myself Learning to love myself We’re all learning to love ourselves Look at the clouds like cartoons in the sky What shapes they make Look at the trees sitting all pretty in the fields Like ornaments Sometimes somethings almost make me cry Sometimes somethings almost make me cry Look at the fields laying flat o’er the hill Like a patchwork quilt Look at the beach squidged up next to the beach Like old friends Sometimes somethings almost make me cry Sometimes somethings almost make me cry Sometimes somethings almost make me cry Sometimes somethings almost make me cry

about

Recorded live on 22nd June 2021 at The Royal Foundation of St Katherine, Limehouse, as part of Red Velvet Summer Festival.

Hopeful redemption. Soaring melodies. Sibling duets. We should have known we could trust Samantha Whates to provide an uplifting comeback after the concert-less desert that was 2020-21. The post-folk singer from Scotland via Walthamstow began making a series of returns to the stage via the beautiful Royal Foundation of St Katherine in Limehouse, as part of the socially distanced Red Velvet Sessions that began in December 2020 – and lucky us, “June” was captured on tape for a full release.

Like all the best live recordings, this album supercharges her songs’ emotional punch as her voice relates these seven delicate stories, for an audience as in need of musical inspiration as Samantha was of the opportunity to perform once more. Accompanied by her dazzling bass playing brother Douglas, and with contributions from Fiona Bevan, “June” is a collection that reminds us what an original voice Whates has and how missed she’s been.

As she observed on the night, we’re all still working out how to do this again – as true for the audience as those on stage. The song selection seems to have grasped this moment too. Sailors returning to shore. The morning sun, warming your face. Making new friends on a late night mission. There’s a bright eyed delight here, a room full of people recalling how music can carve through the air and remake us.

And, as she muses on Dark Waters, “doesn’t that count for something in dark times?”

-----------

The first release is a beautiful duet version of “Sometimes, somethings” from her 2019 LP “Waiting Rooms” available on Lt Ed Orange Vinyl now.

Samantha wishes to thank - All at the Royal Foundation of St Katherine, Roger Preece, Fiona Bevan, Douglas Whates, Jamie Doe, Alexander Mayor, Dylan White, Sarah Brighton, Karousel Music, Adam Beattie, Ida Wenoe and all those who continue to support indie music by buying my music and coming to my shows and sending messages of support and hope.
